To end our time in Kamembe, we were fortunate to visit a couple of other Rwanda Aid projects. Jonas, the Enterprise Manager, kindly took us to Nkombo Island to visit the nursery school and Vocational Training Centre. When we arrived at the nursery, we were greeted with a sea of excited faces. We were all slightly in awe of one of the nursery teachers who had 150 children all singing in perfect harmony. We then walked to the other side of the island to visit Vincent at the Vocational Training Centre. Although the new term had just begun, it was a hive of activity with sewing, carpentry, construction and electrical engineering all taking place.
In the afternoon, Sam, the Farm Manager and Vet, invited us to visit some of the farming projects in Nyamasheke District. This proved to be one of the most moving and eye-opening parts of our trip. Sam explained to us how he trains individuals to look after livestock and maintain good health so that the animals can breed successfully. Sam was a fountain of knowledge and shared with us, our favourite fact, that a pig's gestation period is 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days.
We met a lady who explained to us that she had been living in a mud hut with 3 children and no source of income. Thanks to Rwanda Aid, she was trained in how to care for livestock. She was given a pig that produced 6 piglets which she was then able to sell in order to buy a cow. She has now managed to buy a home for her family and she was thrilled to tell us that her new cow is in calf.
This visit really encapsulated the impact that Rwanda Aid has on this south-western region of the country, helping individuals lead more sustainable lives. A huge thank you to all the Rwanada Aid team at Muzenero House for making us feel so welcome. The Rwanda Aid projects have been completely unforgettable and inspiring; it has been a real privilige to see them first-hand...Boys, we can't wait to tell you more about our experiences here in Rwanda!
