It's been a real pleasure to work alongside the teacher mentors this week and they have been a fun and enthusiastic group. The morning began with the mentors summarising the ideas that they want to put into practice in their schools. This was followed by a lively parliamentary debate which was won by Ellie and the aptly named 'Winners Party' whose policies included; education for all and fighting injustice. We ended the morning with everybody joining in to sing a rendition of a One Direction song at their request!
We then moved into the formal closing ceremony which we all agreed was a very moving experience. There were speeches from all and we were treated to some traditional Rwanda dancing which was followed by the presentation of certificates. It was sad to say goodbye to this inspiring group of teachers and the week just went far too quickly! We wish them all the very best as they return home to their families and enjoy a well-earned rest this weekend before the new term begins on Tuesday.
The mentor training couldn't work as successfully as it did without Alex's commitment and expertise. He has already planned his follow up visits to the mentors and their schools next week. We've learnt a thing or two from Alex's charismatic and captivating speeches!
As the course finished at lunchtime, Jonas, the Enterprise Manager, kindly invited us to visit the craft centre at Ntendezi where we were able to see the crafts being made by the local community. We all felt welcomed by the women who were eager to show us their designs and fell in love with the beautiful paper beads and cards (including Tom)! Following this, Jonas showed us a new bee keeping initiative which works with the local farmers. Sadly, the honey wasn't quite ready yet!
What a brilliant week!
