We've had another great couple of days with the mentors. Yesterday, we focused on phonics, guided reading and using Microsoft Word to create a short term planning template. We then set a challenge for the most creative use of resources for a teaching aid; first place went to a water cycle created from bottle tops.
Today was subject focus day with practical workshops for English, Maths, Science and Social Studies. The aim of these sessions was to share ideas to promote active learning in the classroom. Highlights included: countdown, polygons made from a basic Play-Doh recipe, using natural resources to make maps, alphabet games and incorporating drama to teach parts of speech. The biggest hit proved to be Mr Uliana's 'sound grid'...he would have been proud of us!
The day ended with the Wetherby team staging a demo lesson which the mentors greatly enjoyed dissecting. They are busy this evening preparing teaching resources for demo lessons tomorrow which will no doubt bring out their competitive sides!
